Artist Statement
My artistic process consists of the pictorial expression of concept through painting. It is through paint and the pictorial that I find the most interesting solutions and expressions of concept. And through the process of applying paint to a surface I am involved in history merging with tactile media and figurative imagery to construct something that can be both personal and universal. Despite modern concerns that the practice of painting in comparison to new media is irrelevant, I believe painting is a viable vessel for the exploration of ideas that are only enriched by its historicity and context.
My exploration into contemporary painting practices is personal and I believe contributes to current methods in a relevant way. I champion the painterly mark, the authentic personal statement. I embrace the yoking of concept with the covering and uncovering of surfaces, individual mark making and sentiment. My paintings address concerns of individuals within contemporary society such as identity, loss, being female in a competitive world, the influence of the past on the present, and the connection between self image and social expectation.
